Our Readers' Questions
Is there a natural remedy for UTI's?
Mrs. Rojas asked on Mon, 23 Jul, 2007
I have a uti again and I dont have insurance. I wanted to know if there was a natural remedy besides cranberry juice(which by the way doesnt do much).
crazytazzygirl replied on Mon, 23 Jul, 2007
Believe it or not, cranberry juice does work. You just have to drink a lot of it. It's what my dr recommended after I had a bad reaction to antibiotics. The problem - I can't stand the taste of it! So...i started mixing it with other beverages (i.e., lemonaide and cranberry juice)...but you really do need a lot of it to get any benefits. There are also cranberry juice supplements at any pharmacy - but I can't attest to how well they work. My cat also gets them, and we give him cranberry juice, too.

Aside from Cranberry, some of the most helpful Urinary Tract Health ingredients (natural ones, not including Homeopathic) are Bilberry, Caprylic Acid, D-Mannose, and Celery Seed. Some people also get benefit from Sarsaparilla, Stinging Nettles (from the Root), Juniper Berry, and Uva Ursi... Corn Silk and the B Vitamins are good for Kidney Health, but not as directly for Urinary Tract (all those are in a combination product for the Kidney and Urinary Tract... I know someone else mentioned those).
Most of those items are very cheap (around $5-10 or less, depending on where you get them)

One question about the cranberry juice... were you drinking pure cranberry juice (not the cranberry juice cocktail)? Just checking because pure unsweetened cranberry juice is usually one of the better natural treatments for UTIs. As others have mentioned you can also get cranberry in capsules. Or there's always eating fresh cranberries.
Here are some other options to try:
Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) has a similar effect as cranberry juice. One idea would be to combine Vitamin C supplements with the cranberry juice. Vitamin C capsules are pretty easy to find at any pharmacy or grocery store.
Uva Ursi (Bearberry) is an herb that can be effective in the treatment of UTI. It's available in capsule form and can be found in good health food stores. The usual recommendation is that Uva Ursi not be taken in conjunction with cranberry juice or other acidic juices or foods. Acidic juices tend to make it less effective.
There's an herbal supplement called Juniper Berry Combination that can be found in health food stores (and online) that is used to treat a wide variety of urinary problems, including UTI. It is sometimes combined with ascorbic acid and/or cranberry for sever UTIs.
Agrimony is another herb that is often used to treat infection, particularly UTI. It is most commonly taken as a tea, either commercially prepared or by mixing the dried leaves with boiling water.
Some people recommend blueberries as an alternative to cranberries. This seems to work for some and not for others.
Reducing sugar in your diet (especially sugary drinks) can also help sometimes.
Since you mentioned that this is a recurrence of a previous problem, you might want to consider including acidophilus as a way to help prevent future infections. Some brands of yogurt and milk have acidophilus added or you can get it as a capsule as well.
I hope that helps. Good luck.

don't use sented laudnry deturgent - do not apply any soap to the area in question - do not take baths use showers.
there may be some things that are over the country - but you run the risk of the infection going into your kidney - so use a free clinic and use the steps i outlines above.
also wear only cotton underwear - no synthetics from waist down.
immediately after sex - using a one quart container full of warm water to poured over private parts - using had only for cleaning - do not even use a wash cloth in that area.

A nurse had me go to the store and buy a few lemons to make a cup of lemon juice. Then she said to put 1 tsp of cream of tartar in and mix well....I have been using this remedy for the last 12 years! The only thing is: it works much better in the early stages of UTI's.
Oh, it is not very tasty...but it works well!!!!!

cranberry tablets daily to enhance urinary tract health....if you are prone then it is better to prevent than treat......however, should you recognize the early signs of a UTI........drink (it doesn't taste that nice but swig it)........a tablespoon of baking soda in glass of warm water.......it certainly has helped me.
Cranberry JUICE not cocktail is usually sold unsweetened.....add a drop of honey to make it more palatable........and check into 'why' you are getting repeated UTI's.....always, empty your bladder after having intercourse...........always.........one way of keeping things in balance..........good luck......

cranberry pills and lots of water and/or juice. Stay away from Iced Tea. If it is "fresh brewed" it may contain small amounts of bacteria that can cause UTI's. The instant stuff is okay though.

No, unfortunately, if cranberry juice doesn't work for you (never worked for me either), then you need an antibiotic. You can get Azo at the store--it'll help with the pain a little bit, but it won't treat it. You need to get it taken care of soon, before it spreads to your kidneys. Do you have a free clinic you can go to just to get a prescription? Or do you have a close family doctor you can call and ask them to call in a prescription for you? The medication itself isn't expensive. Just the doctor's visit. But, you have to get it taken care of soon. Good luck.
